Virunga Conservation Area features national parks such as Mgahinga, Virunga Volcanoes National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, which are found in Uganda, Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda, respectively.

All these countries have guides for gorilla trekking, and visitors must have a gorilla trekking permit in order to visit and trek the gorillas in these countries. When it comes to the number of gorillas, Bwindi has more gorillas than all the parks with gorillas in the whole world, and the park has more than 19 habituated gorilla families that are available to be visited by the gorillas.

Each gorilla trekking permit costs $700, and each gorilla family is visited by eight people who spend only one hour seeing these gorillas. However, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to a well-known kagezi family, which is mobile and has been around for a long time. It used to cross to Rwanda and back, but recently it has settled in Uganda.

Further, gorilla trekking also takes place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Kahunzi-Biuega and Virunga National Parks. Constant rebel attacks on park rangers have caused the park to close numerous times over the past ten years as a result of the ongoing political unrest in the eastern Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

There are three national parks: Odzala, which is home to western lowland gorillas; Kahuzi Biega, which is home to eastern lowland gorillas; and Virunga, which is home to mountain gorillas.
