Bwindi Forest is the treasure of the Ugandan tourism industry, and the forest is home to more than half of the endangered mountain gorillas that are remaining in the world. The major tourism activity that is conducted in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is gorilla trekking, which attracts many visitors from all corners of the world to come and meet eye-to-eye with the endangered mountain gorillas.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is found in southern Uganda, and it borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are different gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable and Le Forest National Park, and all these sectors have gorilla fauna. Each client will have to book the gorilla permit, specifying which sectors he or she will go to and track the gorillas.
The Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors include Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushanga, and Nkuringo gorilla trekking sectors. It is because of the species that Bwindi Forest harbors that it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning that the park is of significant value not only to Uganda alone but to the entire world.
Gorilla trekking happens in all four gorilla trekking sectors, and during the gorilla trekking activity, visitors will stop at the starting point of the respective gorilla trekking safari for bragging, and then after the bragging, the respondents will be divided into eight groups and assigned the gorilla family that they are going to trek.
Later on, the ranger guide will lead them into the forest and start trekking as they wait for the gorilla family to be seen. Once the gorilla family is seen, the visitors will have to spend about an hour seeing the gorillas. Once the one hour is done, the visitors will have to trek back to the starting point and get a certificate, and later they will continue with the other day’s programs. So, the whole of this experience is what we call the gorilla trekking experience.
It is an amazing experience, with trackers, rangers, and porters all combining together to ensure that the experience is really interesting and wonderful.
Rushaga gorilla trekking sector: this is the best gorilla trekking sector that is found close to the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as Rwanda. Actually, it is very easy to access the Rushaga gorilla sector through Kigali as compared to when you access it through Entebbe International Airport, and this is because Kigali is very near.
The Rushaga gorilla family is also good, not only for the gorilla trekking experience but for the gorilla habituation experience as well. Visitors who want to spend more than 4 hours with the gorillas will need to reserve this sector.
There are about nine gorilla families that are found in Rushaga, and these are available for gorilla trekking because they are fully habituated. These include the Kahungye, Busingye,Mucunguzi,Rushaga,Bikini, Nshogi, and Bweeza gorilla families.
Nkuringo gorilla family; this is also one of the best sectors found in the park. The sectors also present the best gorilla trekking experience, which is more enjoyable. It’s very accessible, and you can access it by road or plane. From Entebbe International Airport, a number of airline companies’ offer scheduled and charter flights to Kisoro Airstrip, from which you will transfer to the lodge that you have booked in the Nkuringo Gorilla Trekking Sector. You can book your flight with us to avoid confusion.
There are also gorilla families available for tree-trekking permits. Like in other gorilla trekking sectors, each gorilla family in the sector is allocated eight people per day. The Nkuringo gorilla trekking sector some gorilla treks have been known to last up to a full day and call for a certain level of physical fitness.
Don’t worry if you’re not in great shape; gorilla trekking is still very doable with the aid of porters or by hiring a sedan chair to transport you up to the gorillas, and where possible, the sendan chairs will be used.
Buhoma gorilla trekking sector: Buhoma is the oldest and the first gorilla trekking sector, which is very commendable. This is the sector where the gorilla trekking started, and it was from this sector that the first gorilla family was reported, habituated, and then opened to tourists.
The Mubare Gorilla Family, the Habinyanja Gorilla Family, the Rushegura Gorilla Family, the Katwe Gorilla Family, and the Binyindo Gorilla Family are the five habituated gorilla family groups found in Buhoma. In Buhoma, only eight visitors are permitted to trek with each gorilla family each day. You just need to contact us, and we will book for you the gorilla permit from this gorilla trekking family.
The Ruhija gorilla trekking sector; The Ruhija sector is situated in Kabale district, and from Rwanda, it can be easily accessed through the Katuna border post. It is simpler to stay in Buhoma and trek gorillas in Ruhija if one is coming from the Buhoma sector because Ruhija is only a 40-minute drive through the forest.
When compared to Rushaga and Nkuringo in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, the Ruhija sector’s terrain is less hilly and steep, which is an advantage for gorilla trekkers. Four gorilla families, including Kyaguriro, Bitukura, Oruzogo, and Mukiza, live in the Ruhija region. All families are available for gorilla tracking, but in order to reserve a spot for your trek, you must do so in advance.
You must reserve gorilla permits that allow you to travel to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in order to trek with mountain gorilla families there. This is completed on the day you reserve and obtain your gorilla permit at UWA’s Kampala headquarters. Therefore, once you have booked your gorilla trekking safari in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you will do it in one of the above-mentioned sectors.
